Susan Hiller (1940-2019) created this untitled artwork after she was given access to the Freud Family archive at the Freud Museum in Maresfield Gardens during the 1990s.
Inspired by family slides found in the Museum's collection.
Her installation 'From the Freud Museum' was later exhibited in New York (MoMA) and London (Tate) where the work is now in its permanent collection. In 2001, Susan Hiller was one of 5 feminist artists that gifted their work to help raise funds for the Women's Therapy Centre in London.
The Women’s Therapy Centre was established in 1976 by Susie Orbach and Louise Eichenbaum to provide free and low-cost long term psychoanalytic psychotherapy to women on the margins of society. Sadly the Women’s Therapy Centre closed in March 2019, but the proceeds of the sale of Susan Hiller’s work will contribute to the continuation of the valuable psychotherapeutic work with disadvantaged women in a similar psychotherapeutic context.
