Leaving Today: the Freuds in Exile 1938 Exhibition Catalogue

A Freud Museum publication to complement the Summer 2018 exhibition Leaving Today: the Freuds in Exile 1938.

On Saturday 4 June 1938, Sigmund Freud, his wife, Martha, and their daughter Anna left Vienna forever.  On the same day, Freud sent a note to his friend, the writer, Arnold Zweig. In it he wrote, briefly, “Leaving today for 39 Elsworthy Road, London NW3 …”.

This catalogue has been designed to support the Freud Museum's exhibition, documenting the escape of the Freuds from Nazi-annexed Vienna in 1938 and their lives in exile in London.

It combines essays by the Freud Museum director, Carol Seigel, and Honorary Fellow of the Freud Museum, Michael Molnar, with a vast collection of images from our archives that present a comprehensive picture of the Freuds' journey and arrival in London. Some of the featured archival material have never before been on display.
