Ida Applebroog's solo exhibition (her first ever exhibition in Switzerland) at the Kunstmuseum Thun in 2018 was the first exhibition of her series, Angry Birds of America (2018).

Applebroog loves birds and is interested in ornithology. Her work is very much influenced by the drawings of American ornithologist and graphic artist John James Audubon, who made a name for himself with his book Birds of America (1827-1838), with its life-sized illustrations of North American birdlife.

Applebroog's oeuvre demonstrates that the ambivalence between life and death is tangible. Many of the birds in the series look as if they had fallen from a powerline. For Applebroog, they are closely connected to her perception of current American politics and the Trump era. According to her, there is a lot of anger, a lot of rage, not only in her but throughout America. Her feelings are expressed in imagery of angry, irate, or even dead birds.

The publication that accompanies the exhibition and was produced in close collaboration with the artist features an article by Prof. Jo Applin, which goes into depth about this attitude to the current situation in the world.

Exhibition: Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland (09.02.2019 - 19.05.2019).

Ida Applebroog: Mercy Hospital exhibition, 29 February - 7 June 2020.
