Horse & Rider - Teracotta Replica of Freud's Clay Figurine by Martha Todd
¥312.00
A fitting reward for the Ego in its struggle with the unruly Id
Freud uses the metaphor of horse-riding to illustrate the ego's attempts to direct the forces of the id, so this statuette of a horse and rider would have been especially significant for him. The fact that this piece seems to merge man with animal suggests an affinity with Freud's theory that the ego differentiates itself from the id on contact with external reality.
Martha Todd RCA MA is an artist working from her studio in North London. Her work is often conceptual and normally involves sculpting figurative forms, both human and animal. She makes work for exhibitions and on commission.
Her interpretation of Freud's Horse and Rider is slip cast earthenware and terracotta slip with antiquing wax, cast from a mould of her original clay sculpture.
