Sigmund Freud after his arrival in London, 6 June 1938

Sigmund Freud fled from Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938. He came to London and bought a house at 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead, where he died a year later, in September 1939.

On his arrival, Freud commented:

'So now we have really arrived in England, it is very nice and the public, whether friends or strangers, has prepared us a warm welcome. (The climate is less warm...) [...] Of course everything is still uncustomary and as it unreal, a clear sense of alienation.'
From The Diary of Sigmund Freud, 1929-1939 trans. and ed. by Michael Molnar.
