These home movies, filmed by Princess Marie Bonaparte and Mark Brunswick, provide an intimate glimpse into Sigmund Freud's domestic life. The footage includes scenes of the Freuds' Vienna home at Berggasse 19, various summer retreats, the Nazi occupation of Vienna, Freud's short stopover in Paris on the way to exile in England, and his two London homes at 39 Elsworthy Road and 20 Maresfield Gardens (now the Freud Museum).
As such, it documents not only the final decade of the founder of psychoanalysis, but also the dire consequences of the rise of fascism for a Viennese family of Jewish descent. Although overshadowed by this tragedy, the footage is nonetheless curiously uplifting in equal measure: contrary to popular depictions of Freud as stern and austere, these scenes reveal a warm and benign figure enjoying the company of his family and friends, not to mention his beloved dogs.
The footage is presented here with an introduction and commentary by Anna Freud, and features appearances by friends and colleagues such as Princess Marie Bonaparte, Ernest Jones and Sandor Ferenczi, Freud's brother Alexander and their mother Amalia, his wife Martha and her sister Minna Bernays, and their children and grandchildren (including Lucian Freud).
