Exclusive to the Freud Museum, a limited edition of 25 pillows hand woven by artist and weaver Sally Hampson for Women & Freud Exhibition.
Sally Hampson: For Sigmund Freud dreams revealed the unconscious. As soon as you enter the Freud Museum you are surrounded by the word ‘dreaming’. Anna believed that if you were an academic, predominately using one side of your brain, you needed to use the other side by using your hands, so she taught herself to knit, stitch and weave to be in balance. She became extremely proficient in all these skills. For me, weaving feels as if I am definitely using both sides of the brain, from calculating the threads for setting up the loom to then weaving, being intuitive with texture, colour and proportions. The Dream Pillow is for me the in-be-tween point, a manifestation of the two.
Sally Hampson is an artist and weaver based in London. Having helped set up Anna Freud’s loom when it was brought out of storage, Sally was able to see the last piece of weaving on it. She echoed the pattern from this in her ‘Dream Pillow’ in colours and tones of clay from earthy brown, terracotta to soft pink, along with navy, from the blue of the Mies van Rohe chair which sits next to Anna’s loom.
